On January 17, 2025, as Pokémon cards officially entered the Scarlet & Violet era in Simplified Chinese, the first release of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Gem Pack launched on the same day.
Designed specifically for collectors, the Gem Pack line introduced a brand-new way to enjoy Pokémon cards — shifting the focus away from bulk and gameplay toward artwork, foil variety, and visual appeal.
Introducing the First Gem Pack
Each Gem Pack contains four cards, all of which are holographic. With no non-holo cards in circulation, every pack delivers shimmer and finish variety from top to bottom.
The first Gem Pack release features many Pokémon from the Paldea region, including Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. Every Pokémon in the set appears exclusively as a foil card.
Not only do illustrations differ between cards, but even cards with the same artwork may feature multiple foil finishes. Foil treatment itself becomes part of the chase.
Taking Sprigatito as an example, Gem Pack Vol. 1 includes several distinct foil versions of the same Pokémon, such as Grass-type pattern foils, Poké Ball pattern foils, and other decorative finishes. With enough luck, collectors may also uncover special premium foils featuring unique visual effects not found in standard releases.
New Illustration Foil Cards
Gem Pack Vol. 1 also marks the debut of special illustration foil cards depicting the bond between Pokémon and their Trainers. Featured pairings include Sprigatito with Liko, Fuecoco with Roy, Quaxly with Dot, and Captain Pikachu with Friede, inspired by scenes from the Pokémon Horizons anime.
These illustration cards feature entirely new artwork and are exclusive to the Simplified Chinese release, making them the primary chase of Gem Pack Vol. 1.
Launch Promotion Card
To celebrate the launch of Gem Pack Vol. 1, a limited-time promotional holo card was distributed in Mainland China.
Collectors who purchased 30 packs or two full boxes (15 packs per box) during the launch period received one event bonus card.
A total of 250,000 copies of the promo card were produced, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
